10 Mental Math Tricks That Make You Faster Than a Calculator
By the time you've unlocked your phone, opened the calculator and typed the numbers, a practiced mental calculator has already said the answer out loud. The gap isn't talent โ it's a small set of patterns that turn "hard" arithmetic into easy arithmetic. Here are the ten with the best effort-to-payoff ratio. Each takes under a minute to learn.
1. The 11s shortcut
To multiply a two-digit number by 11, add its digits and slot the sum in the middle.
2. Multiply by 5: halve, then ร10
Fives feel awkward, but halving rarely does. Cut the number in half, then move the decimal.
3. Squaring numbers that end in 5
Take the tens digit, multiply it by one more than itself, then append 25.
4. The percentage flip
X% of Y always equals Y% of X. When one direction is ugly, flip it.
5. Doubling and halving
When one factor is even, halve it and double the other. Repeat until the problem is easy.
6. Add and subtract left to right
School teaches right-to-left with carrying โ accurate on paper, slow in your head. Mentally, work big to small: hundreds, then tens, then ones.
7. Subtract by rounding up
Subtracting near a round number? Overshoot to the round number, then give back the difference.
8. The 9s pattern
Every fact in the 9 times table encodes itself: the tens digit is one less than the multiplier, and the digits sum to 9.
9. Divisibility checks in one glance
- รท3? Digit sum divisible by 3 (running check for 741: 7+4+1 = 12 โ yes).
- รท4? Last two digits divisible by 4 (โฆ316 โ 16 โ yes).
- รท9? Digit sum divisible by 9.
- รท6? Even and passes the 3-check.
These turn "does it divide evenly?" from a guess into a two-second scan โ exactly the skill our Daily Target puzzle rewards when you're deciding whether รท is a legal move.
10. Benchmark estimation
For real-world math, a fast answer within 2% beats a slow exact one. Round to friendly anchors, compute, then nudge.
Make it automatic (the 5-minute plan)
Reading tricks is entertainment; using them under light pressure is training. The routine that works:
- 2 minutes: one run of Math Sprint โ the adaptive difficulty forces you to apply shortcuts, not just recall facts.
- 2 minutes: today's Daily Target Warm-up and Easy tiers โ combining numbers strategically is where tricks 4, 5 and 9 shine.
- 1 minute: one table in the times-tables trainer if any multiplication felt sticky.
Five focused minutes a day outperforms an hour on Sunday. Come back tomorrow โ there'll be a fresh puzzle waiting.
