Six Numbers, One Target: A Strategy Guide
Six numbers, one three-digit target, four operations. It looks like a puzzle you either see or you don't โ but it isn't. Strong solvers aren't calculating faster than you; they're running a short checklist, in order, and most targets fall to the first or second item on it.
This guide is that checklist. It's written for the Daily Target puzzle on this site โ five tiers every day, from a two-move warm-up to a five-move expert board โ but the techniques work on any six-number target game.
The four rules that actually shape play
Before strategy, the constraints. These are what make some ideas work and others dead-end:
- Numbers are consumed. Combine two tiles and they're gone, replaced by the result. You get six numbers and each is used at most once.
- You don't have to use them all. Hitting the target is the only goal. Most solutions leave one or two tiles untouched.
- Division must be exact. 20 รท 4 is fine; 20 รท 3 is rejected. No fractions ever appear.
- Results must stay at 1 or above. No negative numbers, no zero โ so subtraction is always larger minus smaller.
One more thing worth knowing: every board is generated from a solution, so a path always exists. If you're stuck, you're missing a route โ not fighting an impossible board.
Read the target before you touch a tile
The single biggest improvement most players make is to stop grabbing numbers and spend five seconds on the target itself. Ask three questions:
- What's it near? 743 is 700 + 43. 336 is 350 โ 14. Round anchors are easy to build.
- What divides it? If the target is even, or ends in 0 or 5, a multiplication route is likely.
- What's on the board? A 25, 50, 75 or 100 tile almost always belongs in the big multiplication that gets you close.
Then pick your route. The four techniques below cover the overwhelming majority of boards.
Technique 1 โ Build the nearest multiple, then adjust
This is the workhorse. Find a product that lands near the target using a big tile, then patch the gap with the leftovers. Nearly every hard board yields to it.
7 ร 100 = 700 โ that's the anchor, and the gap is 43.
18 + 27 = 45 โ 45 โ 2 = 43 โ 700 + 43 = 743.
Notice the order of thought: the anchor came first, the gap second. Beginners try to build 743 from the bottom up and drown in options. The gap is almost always small, and small numbers are easy to make.
Technique 2 โ Factor the target
When the target is comfortably composite, skip addition entirely. Break it into factors and check whether the board can supply them.
336 = 8 ร 42 = 8 ร 6 ร 7, and all three are sitting right there.

A quick tell: if the target is prime, no pure multiplication route exists, so stop looking for one and go straight to Technique 1.
Technique 3 โ Build a round number, then take a bite
Multiplying up to a clean 150, 200 or 300 and subtracting is often shorter than adding your way up. Subtraction is under-used by most players โ it's frequently the fastest move on the board.
138 is awkward. But 150 is easy, and 150 โ 12 = 138.
6 ร 25 = 150 โ 150 โ 12 = 138.
The habit here is the same "round and adjust" move that makes mental subtraction fast in daily life; the rounding trainer drills exactly this reflex.
Technique 4 โ Division makes the number you don't have
Division rarely shrinks the target. Its real job is to manufacture a missing tile โ usually a small one you need for a multiplication.
45 = 9 ร 5, and there's a 9 โ but no 5 anywhere.
12 โ 8 = 4 โ 20 รท 4 = 5 โ 9 ร 5 = 45.
So when a promising factorization is missing exactly one number, don't abandon it. Ask what pair on the board divides into the number you need.
Tier by tier
The five daily tiers aren't just "bigger numbers" โ the mix of tiles changes, and so does the technique that works best.
- Warm-up (2 moves) โ six single digits. Almost always one multiplication plus one adjustment. Don't overthink it.
- Easy (3 moves) โ four small tiles plus two in the teens. The teens are your multipliers; Technique 4 shows up here often.
- Medium (3 moves) โ four mid-size tiles plus two larger ones. Targets are big enough that factoring (Technique 2) starts to pay.
- Hard (4 moves) โ now one of 25/50/75/100 appears. That tile is your anchor almost every time. Technique 1, then patch.
- Expert (5 moves) โ two big tiles. Look for a product of the two large tiles or a large ร small that overshoots slightly, then subtract your way down.
Each board shows its par โ the number of moves the generator used. Par is a ceiling, not a requirement: beating it, as in Technique 2 above, is common and satisfying.
When you're stuck
A practical order of operations:
- Undo one move and try a different second step. Most dead ends are one bad branch, not a bad plan.
- Reset and re-read the target. If you started with addition, try a factorization. If you tried factoring, find the anchor product instead.
- Check the parity. An odd target can't come from an even product alone โ somewhere you need an odd multiplier or an adjustment.
- Take the hint last. It reveals the opening move, and the tier is marked ๐ instead of โญ. A clean five-tier day is worth protecting.
How to actually get better at this
