How GPA is calculated

Your GPA is a weighted average. Each letter grade is worth a number of "grade points" (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). Multiply that by the course's credit hours to get "quality points", add the quality points across all courses, and divide by the total credit hours. Bigger courses pull harder — that's what "weighted" means.

Example: A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and B (3.0) in a 1-credit course → (4.0×3 + 3.0×1) ÷ (3+1) = (12 + 3) ÷ 4 = 3.75.

Standard 4.0 scale

A / A+ = 4.0
C = 2.0
A− = 3.7
C− = 1.7
B+ = 3.3
D+ = 1.3
B = 3.0
D = 1.0
B− = 2.7
D− = 0.7
C+ = 2.3
F = 0.0

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Grade points × credit hours = quality points per course. Sum them, divide by total credit hours.

What is the 4.0 scale?

A/A+ = 4.0 down to F = 0.0, with pluses and minuses at ±0.3/0.4 steps (see table above).

What are credit hours?

The weight of a course. A 4-credit class moves your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit class.
