The four steps, every time

Long division looks intimidating but it is just one short loop repeated: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down (some remember it as "Does McDonald's Sell Burgers?"). You work left to right across the dividend, and each pass produces one digit of the answer.

  1. Divide: how many times does the divisor fit into the current number?
  2. Multiply: that quotient digit ร— the divisor.
  3. Subtract: take it away to find what's left.
  4. Bring down: pull down the next digit and repeat. Whatever remains at the end is the remainder.

Always check: quotient ร— divisor + remainder should equal the number you started with.
