The four coins

Size is not a guide to value, and that is the first thing to say out loud. The dime is the smallest coin there is and it is worth twice the nickel sitting next to it. Color is the one reliable clue: the penny is the only copper one, and everything else is silver. After that it is names and faces, learned by handling real coins.

Count from the largest down

Given a jumbled handful, the instinct is to count the coins in the order they happen to lie. That is what produces wrong totals, because the running number keeps changing step size in an unpredictable way. Sort first — quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies — then count each group in turn and carry the total forward: 25, 50, 75 … 85, 95 … 96, 97. Descending order means the awkward small steps come last, when the hard part is already done.

The pile generator above always draws the coins big-first for exactly this reason. A child who can total a sorted pile but not a jumbled one has not learned to sort, which is a different and easier thing to fix than learning to count.

Making change is addition, not subtraction

Written as a subtraction, $5.00 − $3.47 means borrowing across two zeros — one of the least forgiving procedures in elementary arithmetic. Cashiers never do this. They count up from the price to the note:

  1. $3.47 → $3.50 with three pennies — get to the nearest nickel first.
  2. $3.50 → $4.00 with two quarters — then to the next whole dollar.
  3. $4.00 → $5.00 with one dollar bill — then to the note handed over.
  4. Add what you handed back: 3¢ + 50¢ + $1.00 = $1.53.

Every step is a small forward count to a friendly number, and the answer arrives as a pile of real coins rather than a column of digits. The practice above shows this breakdown with every answer, so the method is visible even when the answer was guessed.

Count the money is the place to start and stays useful for a long time — move up a level only when a jumbled pile is totaled correctly first time, not merely eventually. Make change is the harder sheet and the one that transfers to a real shop. Both print twelve problems on one page with the key on a separate sheet, so it can be kept back or handed over. Coins print as black outlines rather than solid color: clearer on a mono printer, and far kinder to the toner.
